Now that we have established that pH is the most critical cause of acne, you may be thinking “Ok, but how do I attain a healthy pH balance in my body?” The first step is to measure your pH level. Herman Aihara, in his book entitled “Acid & Alkaline”, states that: If the condition of our extra cellular fluids, especially the blood, becomes acidic, our physical condition will first manifest tiredness, proneness to catching colds, etc. When these fluids become more acidic, our condition then manifests pains and suffering such as headaches, chest pains, stomach aches, etc. According to Keiichi Morishita in his Hidden Truth of Cancer, iif the Blood develops a more acidic condition, then our body inevitably deposits these excess acidic substances in some area of the body such so that the blood will not be able to maintain an alkaline condition which causes these areas such as the cells to become acidic and lowers in oxygen.

As this tendency continues, such areas increase in acidity and some cells die; then these dead cells themselves turn into acids. However, some other cells may adapt in that environment. In other words, instead of dying - as normal cells do in an acid environment - some cells survive by becoming abnormal cells. These abnormal cells are called malignant cells. Malignant cells do not correspond with brain function nor with our own DNS memory code. Therefore, malignant cells grow indefinitely and without order. This is cancer.

To understand why some tissues in the body are deficient in oxygen and therefore prone to cancer, it is helpful to understand the nature of acidity and alkalinity. Cancerous tissues are acidic, whereas healthy tissues are alkaline. Water (H2O) decomposes into H+ and OH-. When a solution contains more H+ than OH- then it is said to be acid. When it contains more OH- than H+ then it is said to be alkaline.

When oxygen enters an acid solution it can combine with H+ ions to form water. Oxygen helps to neutralize the acid, while at the same time the acid prevents oxygen from reaching the tissues that need it. Acidic tissues are devoid of free oxygen.

An alkaline solution is just the reverse. Two hydroxyl ions (OH-) can combine to produce one water molecule and one oxygen atom. In other words, an alkaline solution can provide oxygen to the tissues.

The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkaline. The blood, lymph and cerebral spinal fluid in the human body are designed to be slightly alkaline at a pH of 7.4.

At a pH slightly above 7.4 cancer cells become dormant and at pH 8.5 cancer cells will die while healthy cells will live (Barefoot, pages 66-67). This has given rise to a variety of treatments based on increasing the alkalinity of the tissues such as vegetarian diet, the drinking of fresh fruit and vegetable juices, and dietary supplementation with alkaline minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, cesium and rubidium.

In Holland the vegetarian diet promoted by Dr. Moerman has been recognized by the government as a legitimate treatment for cancer. Results indicate that Dr. Moerman’s diet is more effective than standard cancer treatments (Jochems, 1990).

Chris Reynolds readily admits there was a time when he was a self-proclaimed sceptic but these days, he’s a believer, and his faith is wheatgrass as a cure for leprosy ulcers.

The Caloundra-based GP believes the sprout could change the world and dozens of Indian doctors agree with him.

Dr Reynolds has just returned from a trip to the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh where he was involved in clinical trials to see how effective wheatgrass was at treating ulcers caused by leprosy.

His visit made national headlines in India.

Dr Reynolds said he first became aware of the healing properties of wheatgrass when he treated a Flemington bookie for a diabetic ulcer in 1995.

“Prior to that I was very much an… orthodox practitioner,” he said.

Dr Reynolds said he had been on a house-call visit to treat the bookie, who refused to go to hospital for his ulcer.

On a whim, Dr Reynolds decided to dress the ulcer with wheatgrass since he had to rush back to his surgery.

He promised to return the next day.

“When I removed the dressing, I said this is a miracle,” he said.

“It was clean, the whole wound had completely disappeared… it was something I’d never seen before.

“It was the first healing phenomenon I’d ever seen. It was small but important.”

Dr Reynolds said he subsequently used wheatgrass to treat many patients in Australia.

“My very first patient was one with a leprosy ulcer and he was also a diabetic and they get a lot of ulcers, so he was a double challenge,” Dr Reynolds said.

“His ulcer had been there for a year and in a week it changed. In three months it was completely healed. That set the ball rolling.”

Dr Reynolds decided to kick-start a pilot study of 20 patients, some of whom had ulcers that were more than 30 years old.

“They’re all starting to heal … the fact any of them is healing is amazing,” he said.

Wheatgrass was the subject of research for its healing properties in the 1930s, but Dr Reynolds said the studies were abandoned when penicillin was discovered in 1941.

He said wheatgrass seemed to work because it stimulated cell growth.

Dr Reynolds said the discovery could have a huge impact on the lives of leprosy patients, who had been cured of the disease but still had the ulcers.

“It will enable these people to work, some people can’t work because ulcers on their feet,” he said.

“In due course they can treat themselves, get back to work, regain an occupation and most importantly their dignity.

“These people are forgotten, they’re thrown off trains because they’re lepers.

“My aim as a doctor has always been to improve quality of life of a patient and you can’t always get success.

“This is something we’re definitely doing here and making a difference.”

While it has been known for some time that eating cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, can help prevent breast cancer, the mechanism by which the active substances in these vegetables inhibit cell proliferation was unknown — until now.

Scientists in the UC Santa Barbara laboratories of Leslie Wilson, professor of biochemistry and pharmacology, and Mary Ann Jordan, adjunct professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, have shown how the healing power of these vegetables works at the cellular level. Their research is published in this month’s journal Carcinogenesis.

“Breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, can be protected against by eating cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage and near relatives of cabbage such as broccoli and cauliflower,” said first author Olga Azarenko, who is a graduate student at UCSB. “These vegetables contain compounds called isothiocyanates which we believe to be responsible for the cancer-preventive and anti-carcinogenic activities in these vegetables. Broccoli and broccoli sprouts have the highest amount of the isothiocyanates.

“Our paper focuses on the anti-cancer activity of one of these compounds, called sulforaphane, or SFN,” Azarenko added. “It has already been shown to reduce the incidence and rate of chemically induced mammary tumors in animals. It inhibits the growth of cultured human breast cancer cells, leading to cell death.”

Azarenko made the surprising discovery that SFN inhibits the proliferation of human tumor cells by a mechanism similar to the way that the anticancer drugs taxol and vincristine inhibit cell division during mitosis. Mitosis is the process in which the duplicated DNA in the form of chromosomes is accurately distributed to the two daughter cells when a cell divides.

Hundreds of tiny tube-like structures, called microtubules, make up the machinery that cells use to separate the chromosomes. SFN, like the more powerful anticancer agents, interferes with microtubule functioning during mitosis in a similar manner to the more powerful anticancer drugs. However SFN is much weaker than these other plant-based drugs, and thus much less toxic.

“SFN may be an effective cancer preventive agent because it inhibits the proliferation and kills precancerous cells,” said Wilson. It is also possible that it could be used as an addition to taxol and other similar drugs to increase effective killing of tumor cells without increased toxicity.
